Stressed!

What to do when you feel that way

Some of our team are reading Dr. Elissa Epel’s book, The Stress Prescription. In the book Epel writes about good stressors and bad stressors, actions to take, and how to reframe stress.

Among managing cash flows, employees and customers, and strategy, an entrepreneur must also manage themselves.

One of Epel’s most powerful ideas is framing situations as challenges rather than treats. And she insists it is a choice.

Is speaking at the Rotary Club a threat to our status or an opportunity to expand our business? Is this sales call a threat to our ego or opportunity for a sale? Is meeting with competitors a threat to our secrets or opportunity to strengthen our industry?

But even though it’s a choice it’s not a switch. Practice this framing, Epel explains, and we’ll get better at it.

Stress is unavoidable, but not uncontrollable. Through a simple switch we can change our stress, maybe even for the better.
