What Do People Want?

Why Sam Altman is One of the Greats

Jeff Bezos calls it “customer obsession”.

Estee Lauder focused on “knowing what women want”.

Whatever you call it, you have to put the consumer on a pedestal. Obsess over providing value.

Sam Altman will be spoken about in the same breath as Gates, Bezos, and Zuckerberg because he spent more than a decade mastering this skill.

On a team of world-class machine learning engineers at OpenAI, Sam was the only one that realized their autoregressive language model (GPT-3) was not easy to use.

It required technical sophistication, patience, and context. A price that most people won’t pay.

So he asked his team to build a chat interface. They thought it was a foolish idea. They were exceptionally wrong.

ChatGPT was the most successful product launch in human history.

The only thing more shocking than its success, might be that Altman was not surprised.
