Give feedback like Bob Iger

six short suggestions

Bob Iger’s Disney acquired Pixar in 2006 for seven billion dollars. The acquisition added intellectual property but also people to the Disney studio.

Most businesses don’t make blockbuster movies, but in every business people execute ideas.

It’s why hiring is so important. It’s why leadership is a skill. It’s why feedback is tough.

According to Iger, there are six best practices for feedback.

Do put yourself in their shoes. Sometimes the work is part of their identity - don’t stomp on it.

Do not lead with your ego or status. Feedback is not a demonstration of your authority, it’s a contribution to their progress.

Do present situations to be improved. Paint in broad strokes rather than highlight minutia.

Do not present solutions. This person was hired for a reason.

Do lead with something positive, even superficial, because it puts people at ease.

Do not overdo feedback. If their body language indicates they’ve heard enough then follow up with an email.

Only one business is Disney, but every business needs feedback.
