Uncover New Markets

the story of Charles Merrill

Throughout history, many of the greatest entrepreneurs have played the same note to great success.

Take a product or service that is popular, and valuable, in one market and re-design it to serve another group of people.

After years of middling success in investment banking, Charles Merrill pivoted his firm to bring “Wall Street to Main Street".

Merrill Lynch educated its clients through free classes, public relations that countered traditional bank marketing, and reducing their commissions.

In 1949, their advertisement for "women who'd like to know more about investments" prompted 30,000 to enroll in an eight-week course.

He made the business work by collecting a larger volume of accounts to make up for lower commission revenue.

By 1958, the firm opened its 100,000th account and effectively transformed America’s relationship with finance.
